William Ernest Henley

William Ernest Henley1849–190319th centuryVictorian William Ernest Henley was an English poet, critic, and editor. He is best remembered for his poem Invictus, written while recovering from tuberculosis of the bone and amputation of his foot, which ends with the famous lines 'I am the master of my fate, / I am the captain of my soul'. He was also the inspiration for Long John Silver in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
