Emma Lazarus1849–188719th century Emma Lazarus was an American poet and activist, best known for her sonnet 'The New Colossus,' which is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. She wrote extensively on Jewish themes and advocated for Jewish refugees fleeing persecution in Europe.
