The Struggle to Survive

The phrase struggle for existence can sound dramatic, as if nature is only fighting. Darwin meant something broader. Every living thing needs resources: food, water, light, space, shelter, and chances to reproduce. Those resources are limited.

A tree may release thousands of seeds, but only a few will become mature trees. A frog may lay many eggs, but many tadpoles will be eaten or fail to find enough food. A flowering plant may produce many seedlings, but only those that get enough light and soil may survive.
