Hugh John Lofting was a British-American author and illustrator best known for creating Doctor Dolittle, a kind physician who can talk to animals. He invented the character in letters to his children from the trenches of World War I. 'The Story of Doctor Dolittle' (1920) launched one of the most beloved series in children's literature, winning the Newbery Medal for its sequel 'The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle' (1922).
