With downward eye and gazes sad,

Stands amid the glancing showers

A jonquil, not a Grecian lad.

Now crown'd with myrtle, on the Elysian coast,

Amid those lovers, joys his gentle ghost:

Pleased, while with smiles his happy lines you view,

Colours that change whene'er they wave their wings.

Amid the circle, on the gilded mast,

Superior by the head, was Ariel placed;

Vainly have you prolonged your effort,

For I descend amid you,

Past rungs and slopes of curving slippery steel.

This perfect beauty; waves within a tide,

Or single notes amid a glorious throng.

The song of earth has many different chords;

Lost amid greenness

We will sleep all night;

Here butterflies and bees fare far to rove

Amid the crumpled leaves of poppy flowers;

Here four o'clocks, to the passionate night above

I must have it all before night,

To sing amid my green.
