The proposition that all AI-generated content should be clearly labelled appears, at first glance, to be an unassailable defence of transparency. Who could oppose letting readers know whether a text was written by a human or a machine? Yet a closer examination reveals that mandatory labelling may be not only impractical but also counterproductive, undermining the very trust it purports to protect. This essay argues against clear labels on AI-generated content, contending that they create a false sense of security, oversimplify the nature of authorship, and risk normalising a surveillance-oriented approach to digital communication.

First, clear labels foster a misleading binary between human and machine authorship. In reality, most content today exists on a spectrum: a journalist might use an AI tool to generate a first draft, then heavily edit it; a poet might employ a language model for inspiration; a student might rely on grammar-checking software that incorporates AI. Where does one draw the line? A label that says 'AI-generated' could be technically true yet practically meaningless, because it fails to capture the degree of human involvement. Worse, it may lead readers to assume that unlabelled content is entirely human-authored, which is increasingly false. The epistemic fairness that labelling advocates champion is thus undermined by the very crudeness of the label. Consider the case of a novelist who uses AI to overcome writer's block but rewrites every sentence: should their work be labelled? It relies on a simplistic view of authorship, underestimates the practical challenges of enforcement, and risks creating a surveillance apparatus that harms the very openness it seeks to protect.
