n 1739: Uriah and Samuel Stevens, sons of ourThomas of Plainfield, Conn., settled in Canaan, andnearly all of this family within a few years were locatedthere. Uriah, Andrew, and Benjamin were very prom-inent in the town affairs, holding the positions of Se-lectman, Town Clerk, Representative to the ColonialLegislature, Incorporator of the town, and Captain ofMilitia. In 1748 Ebenezer, the son of Richard, was an in-habitant. Between 1750 and 1752 Henry and JedediahStephens, sons of Henry, settled there, and were fol-lowed by many others from Stonington. There are still members of the Stevens family resid-ing in Canaan who are descended from the early settlers.
