HE rank that New England occupies in the Union, the influ-ence her institutions have, and are exerting upon the civilizationof the present century, are duly appreciated by all intelligentmen. RIVER BUSINESS DIRECTORY. SAYBROOK, Town of Middlesex County, Connecticut, is situ-ated on the west bank and at the mouth of the river, borderingon Long Island Sound. Distance from Hartford 45 miles, andfrom New London 17 miles. The principal street runs nearly north and south, and upon itthe dwellings and stores are mostly located. Its situation on thesound makes it an excellent summer resort. Shad fishing isprobably carried on more extensively here than at any otherplace on the river. Steamboats plying between New York and Hartford, stop here.The town is also accessible by the Shore Line Railroad.
