IDDLETOWN, Middlesex County, Connecticut, is situatedon the west bank of the Connecticut River, 15 miles south ofHartford, 384 miles from Long Island Sound and 24 miles fromNew Haven A branch railroad connects this place with the NewHaven, Hartford and Spriugfield Railroad. The Hartford, NewYork and River Steamboats land here, there being spaciouswharves and ample depth of water in the summer season. The city is pleasantly situated on elevated ground, command-ing a fine view of the surrounding country, and contains manybeautiful residences. The principal public buildings are theCustom House and Court House, both constructed of Freestone.Middletown is a port of entry and shire town of MiddlesexCounty, and contains about 12,000 inhabitants. The extensivePump manufactory of W. & B Douglass, is located here. Considerable business is done making Sewing Machines, PlatedGoods, Machinery, &c. Wesleyan University, a Methodist Institution, is located here,and occupies an elevated position overlooking the city and thevalley of the Connecticut.
