HARTFORD, Hartford County, Connecticut, is situated onthe west bank of the Connecticut River, 50 miles from its mouth,and distant from New York, 110 miles, New Haven 36 miles,Springfield, Mass., 26 miles, Boston 124 miles, Montreal, Canada,336 miles, Providence, R. I., 90 miles, Albany 126, in Latitude41 deg., 45 min., 59 sec., and Longitude 4 deg., 15 min., eastfrom Washington. It may not be amiss in this book to give abrief historical sketch of the place. In 1633, 0n the point ofland now known as “Dutch Point,” at the junction of the Con-necticut and Park rivers, the Dutch erected a Fort, which theynamed the “Home of Hope.” ‘Two years afterwards a settle-ment was begun by a company of settlers from Newtown, (nowCambridge,) Dorchester and Watertown, Mass. Its Indian name was ‘“‘Suckiaug.” The white settlers firstcalled it Newtown, but in 1636 formally named it Hartford, afterHartford, now called’ Hertford, in Hertfordshire, England, andduring this year (1635) was held the first Town Meeting. In 1654, by an act of the General Court of Connecticut, theDutch were compelled to leave, and consequently the wholecolony came entirely into the hands of the English. BUSINESS DIRECTORY. 105 The first written Constitution ever formed in America, washere written and finished by five men, viz.: Ludlow, Haynes,Wolcott, Hopkins and Hooker, in the year 1639. In 1640 aHouse of Correction was established. The General Court, in theyear 1644, ordered the establishment of an Inn, which in afteryears became historically associated with Col. Wadsworth and thefamous ‘‘ Charter,”? which he concealed in the hollow of an oldoak. The tree was carefully preserved, and remained standingtill within a few years. The first Printing Office here was started in the year 1764, byThomas Green, who commenced the publication of the Connec-ticut Courant. The act of incorporating the city was performedin the year 1784. Hight years afterwards the Hartford Bank and- Hartford Charitable Society were organized. The shipping interests of Hartford are quite large, there being5 Steamboats, regularly plying between this point and New York,two river steamers, two lines of steam freight packets to Albany,Philadelphia and Baltimore, and regular lines of packets to for-eign and domestic ports. Hartford is the leading Insurance cityin the United States, there being no less than 22 companies insuccessful operation, consisting of Fire, Life, Accident, LiveStock, Steam Boiler, &c. Several more are chartered this sea-son, which will soon be actively working. Among the largemanufactories in the city may be mentioned Colt’s Patent FireArms Manufacturing Co., with a capital of $1,000,000, and own-ing the largest and finest shop of the kind in the country ; Sharps’Rifle Manufacturing Co., Cheney Brothers, Silk Manufacturers,Case, Lockwood & Co., Printers, Weed Sewing Machine Com-pany, Woodruff & Beach Iron Works, Phcenix Iron Works, Bul-lard & Parsons, Machinists, with many others of lesser magni-tude. There are 12 banks of issue in the city, with an agere-gate capital of about $8,000,000, also 8 Savings Banks. The city :has 25 churches, among which number are some of the finestchurch edifices in the country. The Park, bounded on the east,north and west by Park River, and containing 46 acres, is an or-nament to the city.
