This armywas joined to that of the circles, commandedby prince Hilbourghaufen. When Frederic was furrounded by fo manyenemies, he took the refolution to die fword-in-hand in the ranks of the army of the princede Soubize ; but, at the fame time, took everyflneafure to conquer him. After reconnoitring the army of France,and the circles, he immediately retreated be-fore them in order to poflefs himfelf of an ad-vantageous fituation. Prince Hilbourghaufenwas refolved to attack him, and his opinion ofcourfe prevailed, becaufe the French were onlyauxiliaries. They therefore marched betweenRotbach and Metzbourg to attack the Pruffianarmy, which was apparently encamped ; but,all of a fudden, the tents were ftruck, and thePruffians appeared in order of battle, betweentwo eminences lined with artillery. This unexpe&ed fight intimidated the Frenchand Imperialifts. For feveral years it had beenin agitation to exercife the French troops afterthe Pruffian method ; afterwards feveral evo-lutions had been altered in the exercife, fo thatthe foldier did not know what he was doing ;his old way of fighting was changed, and hewas not perfedl in the new.
