oubtless was as true of Mr. Stone, as it ever was ofany other human being. ‘This is no flattery. It is thedeliberate judgment of one who, for a quarter of a cen-tury, had the best opportunity of knowing the subjectof this just praise. But I must approach the closing» scene of this meeting... And O! how shall I approachit! How shall I attempt a description of that which| defies and baffles all description! It was a scene wor-4 thy the pencil of the celebrated Michael Angelo.| During the progress of the meeting the venerable: Stone spoke but little, as he was feeble, and as there° were several preachers present. But on Monday, the| last day of the meeting, all expected from him a partingaddress. While memory lives, I can never forget thatday. The circumstances of that parting scene are in-: delibly engraved on the tablets of my heart. With staff: in hand, the venerable man limps into the pulpit, andtakes his stand before a numerous and eager audience.: What must be his feelings while he reflects that he oc-cupies for the last time the pulpit which he had so often: filled for near forty-seven years! His feelings may be* ©) imagined, but cannot be described. The silence of deathpervades the audience; and all are leaning forwardwith intense interest to hear the last instructions, admo-* nitions and exhortations of their father in the gospel.| ’Tis no blind devotion toa man that has caused thethrilling interest of this hour. True—they love him.But they love him for the truth’s sake—for his works’sake—for Christ’s sake. They love him as the imbodi-ment of those social, domestic, and Christian virtues,which are the glory of human nature, and which pre-sent him, in the ecclesiastical heavens, as a star of thefirst magnitude. He opens the New Testament, and reads from the20th of Acts, commencing with the 17th verse, to the21st, inclusive :—‘‘ And from Miletus he sent to Ephe-sus, ‘and called the elders of the church.
