If you do not know the number, you canget it by asking “Information.” Then say toyour local operator, for instance, “I wantPittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lehigh 9375.” If you have not obtained the number from“Information” or wish to make the call “col-lect,” call “Long Distance.” Then say, “Iwant anyone at Alfred Green’s residence at927 Park Avenue, New York.” Be sure youdo not specify any particular person withwhom you wish to talk. Charges do not begin until the called tele-phone answers. There is no charge if thecall is not completed, except for a small reportcharge in the case of a “collect” call on whichthe called party will not accept the charges.
