uch as the Old Folks Home, the Friendly Neighborhood House, YMCA and YWCA Camp Funds,Timothy House, the Newark FreshAir Fund, the Schomburg Centerfor Research in Black Culture. Through both world wars, the members ofthe Phillis Wheatley Literary Club werecognizant of the needs and services of ourcountry. They worked with great energyand zeal in United States Bond Drives,provided entertainment for troops and didknitting and other duties for the RedCross. Since the inception of the UnitedNations, several of the members were deep-ly interested and involved in the work ofthis world organization. Besides the personal growth each memberexperienced, the club has been responsiblefor continued public awareness of litera-ture and cu’ture by its sponsorship ofexhibits of literature and art at both theNewark and Orange Public Libraries suchas - paintings and sculpture by 24 nation-ally known Negro artists and The FirstTwo Hundred Years of Negro Literature. Ithas also maintained membership in theNewark Museum where the group has met onoccasion. Today, seventy-seven years later, thePhillis Wheatley Literary Club continues tocarry out the objectives of its founders.The membership remains committed to thetasks of: - encouraging gifted minority youngpeople to realize their potentialin the arts; - fulfilling their personal goalsof cultural self-enrichment; and - bringing to the public, informa-tion to enhance their knowledgeand appreciation of literatureand the arts. Monthly club meetings are planned withprograms that include presentations onliterature, music, art, drama, informationrelative to our Black Heritage, and dis-cussions of current events and racialissues. = a =
