Therewere, of course, those who held with the de-parted minister, as well as those who wereagainst him; and so two parties arose in thechurch, each contending for supremacy. Eachparty refused to endorse any measure or supportany candidate suggested by the other; and asneither was strong enough to run the churchalone, they were in a state of inactive equipoisevery gratifying to that individual who is sup-posed to take delight in the discomfort of therighteous.83
