Matthew Arnold·1822–1888
The Jansenists erect ‘grace’ into a kind of fourth person of theTrinity. They are, without thinking or intending it, Quaternitarians.St. Paul and St. Augustine, too exclusively studied, have done all themischief. Instead of ‘grace,’ say help, succor, a divine influence, adew of heaven; then one can come to a right understanding. The word‘grace’ is a sort of talisman, all the baneful spell of which can bebroken by translating it. The trick of personifying words is a fatalsource of mischief in theology.”
