James Merrill·1926–1995
his work on the elementary geology of Tennessee wasprepared for the use of schools as well as for the use of allpersons interested in the study of the resources of the State. The predominant idea in its preparation was to give to theyoung people of the State some knowledge of the great com-monwealth in which they live, and further to enable them toimpart to others some idea of its vast and varied resources, itsbeautiful landscapes, its grand rivers, and its lovely climate.Such knowledge will be of the utmost value to all citizens, whether young or old, and will not only be useful from aneconomical point of view, but it will be a source of perpetualpleasure throughout their lives. Students in the lower grades, and those in the common schools who do not intend to take ahigh school or collegiate course, should study Parts I. andIV. only. Advanced students may study the whole book.with profit, i The authors desire to express their grateful acknowledg-ments to Maj. H. C. Bate, the local forecast official and sec-tion director of the weather bureau at Nashville, for con-tributing the larger portion of the chapter on the "Climateof Tennessee," which is full of interesting and useful data. Having spent a large portion of their lives in the study ofthe geology and resources of Tennessee, the authors hopethat the work herewith presented may meet the approval ofthe teachers of the State.
