East Tennessee. — Comprising all the territory from the NorthCarolina boundary to about a line passing though the center ofthe Cumberand Table-land, embracing the first and second natu-ral divisions, and about half of the third; land area, 13,113 squaremiles. II. Middle Tennessee. — Extending from the dividing line onthe Cumberland Table-land to the Tennessee river, and compris-ing the whole of the fourth and fifth natural divisions and abouthalf of the third and sixth; land area, 18,126 square miles. III. West Tennessee. — Extending from the Tennessee river tothe Mississippi and including the whole of the seventh and eighthnatural divisions and half, of the sixth; land area, 10,512 squaremiles. To these land areas must be added 300 square miles of waterarea, most of which is taken up by the lakes and rivers of WestTennessee. These three civil divisions are subdivided into 96counties.
