he mathematical preparation of the subjects ranged from oneyear of high school mathematics to four years of high school mathematics in both sections. One student in the LCD group had had two semesters of ve Ii| Te)college mathematics in addition to four years of secondary school mathe-matics. Two other students in the LOD group had had one semester ofcollege mathematics in addition to three years of high school mathematics.Three students in the LSGD group had taken a one-semester college mathe-matics course plus three years of secondary school mathematics. The meannumber of years of secondary school mathematics was 2.5 for both groups.Inasmuch as secondary school mathematics courses vary rather widelyin scope, depth, and general quality, no attempt was made to furthercategorize the high school units in mathematics. The A.Cc.T percentile scores in mathematics ranged from 1 to99 in the LCD group and from 1 to 81 in the LSGD section, with means of50.95 and 51.95, respectively. The sum of the five A.C.T. percentilescores obtained--English, mathematics, science, natural science, adgeneral--ranged from 0 to 466 in the LCD section and from 36 to 419 inthe LSGD class. Mean totals in the LCD and LSGD groups were 257.10 md277.90, with standard deviations of 116.43 and 102.2, respectively.Group data is ~ummarized in Table 4, and individual student scores aregiven in Table S. Appendix B contains individual student percentileon the English, science, natural science, and general portions of theA.U.T. examinations. Students numbered 1, 2, 5» 7) 95 10, 12, 1h, 15, and 19 comprisethe upper one-half ability level of the LCD section and students numbered 1, bh, 6, 8, 125 Uy 15, 16, 18, and 19 make up the upper one-half ability level of the LSGD group. The ranges of the upper and lower one-half A.c.?T. mathematics percentile of the LOD section are 56 to 99 and 1 to 7, respec- tively. The corresponding ranges in the LSGD group are 61 to 81 and 14 fiI nema 0 to 6. Mean percentiles for the two halves are 73.1 and 28.8 in the LCD group and 72.5 and 31.0 in the LSGD class.
