he following are among the results and conclusions reported in the dissertation. Conclusions are based on data collected, analysis of the data, and an analysis of a questionnaire on the student's opinion of the course. le 36 6. Although posttest mean score exceeded pretest meanscore on the attitude scale in both sections, neitherwas significantly greater at the .05 level of confidence.Differences between mean scores of the two groups oneach of the criterion measures failed to be significantat the .05 level, although in each case the mean scoreof the LSGD section was greater than that of the LODgroup. Te mean score of the upper one-half ability level ofthe LSGD section was significantly greater, at the .Ollevel of confidence, than the mean score of the upperone-half ability level of the LOD section on the criterionmeasure "achievement on tests of independent readingability in mathematics." The LSGD group examined the same amount of mathematicalmaterial as the LCD section without sacrificing courseachievement. Students in the LSGD section were more inclined tobelieve their attitude toward mathematics had beenenhanced over the semester than did students of the LOD groupe
