Considerable woodlands on the farm pro-mised, if properly developed, to yield a good return ;but such development required money and constantsupervision, while a country doctor could furnishlittle of either. In consequence, each year grewharder than the one before. Floods too along theSusquehanna finally swept away a great body oflumber which had gradually been collected there.In the middle of her junior year letters from homedisclosed serious entanglement. She did not wait forconsultation with her family, but applied at once toPresident Angell for a position as a teacher, acceptedan appointment, travelled to her new home atOttawa, Illinois, and was already established in herduties there before she informed her parents. Thiswas in January, 1875, when she was not twentyyears old. The Ottawa High School had suddenly lost itsprincipal and needed a prudent management to keepit from going to pieces. She became its head.
