In1634 the Jesuit Father Perrault established a mission onCape Breton, and from this there developed a very success-ful work among the Micmacs, which was later aided by theRecollects and the Sulpicians of Quebec. Father GabrielDruiellettes, a Jesuit, visited the country around the mouthof the Kennebec in 1646, and for eleven years successfullytaught the Abnakis of that region. In 1650 he visited theEnglish settlements of Massachusetts to discuss a proposalof union between New England and New France againstthe Iroquois. The first Catholic church in New England was built atOldtown, Maine, in 1688 by the Reverend Louis P. Thury.Among the noted missionaries of these early days was theReverend Sebastian Rale, a Jesuit, who spent nearly thirtyyears among the Indians of Maine and compiled a dic-tionary of the Abnaki tongue. He was the trusted adviserof the Indians in the border troubles of the day and waskilled by the English at his post of duty at Norridgewockin 1724. 40. Missions among the Hurons.— The Huron, orWyandot, Indians, unlike the wandering tribes of the lowerSt. Lawrence, tilled the soil and had a fixed abode in theregion east of Lake Huron. They were visited for a briefperiod in 1615 by the Recollect Father Le Caron. Othermembers of his order came to them in the following tenyears, among them the lay brother, Gabriel Sagard, historianof the Recollect missions. In 1626 Father Brebeuf, a Jesuit,took up the work among the Hurons. His success was con-siderable, but while visiting Quebec in 1629 he fell into thehands of the English, who had taken that place.
