o the grizzly bear invited all the large animals tohis house. When they had come together, he said tothem: “You know how greatly we are troubled, and howmisfortune has come to us because of these people whopursue us even into our dens. Now it is in my mind toask Him who made us to give us more cold in winter.I would ask Him to give us such severe cold that nohunter can come and kill us in our dens.” Thus spoke Grizzly Bear to his guests, and all thelarge animals agreed to what the chief had suggested.But the wolf said: “ Let us invite all the small animals — such as Por-cupine, Beaver, Raccoon, Marten, Mink, even down to such small animals as the mouse, and the insects that move on the earth. For if they came forth and objected | to our plan, it might fail.”So the following day all the large animals as- sembled on the prairie.
