13 lines
Elizabeth Bishop·1911–1979
he rabbit began to suffer and thirst, and as she hadno right to the well, she had to use her wits to get water. She decided, as the easiest way, to steal from the pub-lic well. The rest of the animals, surprised to find that therabbit was so well supplied with water, asked herwhere she got it. She replied that she rose early in the morning andgathered the dewdrops. The wolf and the fox, however, suspected her oftheft, and thought of a way to find out whether she wasguilty. They made a wolf of tar and placed it near the well.
