Theearliest version of these lines appeared in the 'Southern LiteraryMessenger' for September 1835, as "Lines written in an Album," and wasaddressed to Eliza White, the proprietor's daughter. Slightly revised,the poem reappeared in Burton's 'Gentleman's Magazine' for August, 1839,as "To----." * * * * *
