HE Cost OF THE War. There are men so small in spirit, so pitifullycramped in soul, that they suggest that the warcost too much, The Republican platform echoesthis complaint. It was indeed, an expensivewar. War is the most wasteful thing in theworld. But is money to be measured against theblood of American soldiers? Would it not bebetter to spend a billion dollars for shells thatwere never exploded, than to have one Americanboy on the firing line minus an essential car-tridge? (Cries of “yes” and applause). Wasit not better to prepare for a long war and makeit short, than to prepare for a short war andmake it long? (Applause) When criticism ismade of the expense of war, let us not forgetthat we bought with it the freedom and the safetyof the civilization of the world. (Applause, loudand continued).
