ADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE CONVENTION: At this high hour when the destinies not onlyof political parties but of peoples are at stake;when social unrest is everywhere apparent; whenexisting forms of government are being chal-lenged, and their very foundations disturbed orswept away, it is well for us, here in America, topause for a period of solemn deliberation. We, who assemble in this great convention, counsel together, not merely as members of aparty, but as children of the Republic. (Ap-plause). Love of country and devotion to humanservice should purge our hearts of all unworthyor misleading motives. Let us fervently pray fora Divine Blessing upon all that we do or under-take. Let us pledge ourselves anew to equalityof opportunity; the unity of our country above theinterests of groups or classes; and the main-tenance of the high honor of America in herdealings with other nations. (Applause)
