ear saw the appearance, at Florence^ of the firstcomplete English version of the Fita Nuova (togetherwith the Italian text). This was the work of anEnglishman resident in the city of Dante's birth, JosephGarrow. It was a sound performance, but lacked allinspiration, and so it fell dead. To America belongsthe distinction of having contributed the most profoundstudy in English to the literature of the Fita Nuova. This was the admirable Essay, with translations, published in a limited and very beautiful edition, atCambridge, Mass., in 1859.^ It was <*mo8t affection-ately dedicated " by its author, Charles Eliot Norton,to. James Russell Lowell. These two scholars, withLongfellow, formed a group of Dantists whom anycountry might be proud to own. The essay dealtin masterly fashion with the New Life before and afterthe death of Beatrice, with the date aud structure ofthe work and with its relations to the Convtvlo. Rarelyif ever has Dante's youthful love been approachedand treated in a more reverent spirit. <<I have left back, if the volumet are accessible anywhere in Belfast. The article is called, I tliink, Damt* and Beatrice, and is byTheodore Martin, better known as Bon Gauitler."
